Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Wilmington OH
120 PM EDT Fri Aug 15 2025
.SYNOPSIS...
Surface high pressure building across the Great Lakes will offer
mainly dry conditions through tonight, with only a stray shower or
storm possible into early evening. Periodic shower and storm chances
will gradually increase this weekend into early next week. A warming
trend will develop this weekend into early next week as well. Chances
for showers and storms increase by Wednesday as a frontal boundary
moves through the region and a cooler pattern develops.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Mid level ridge over the nations mid section with ILN/s area around
the periphery of it`s center. Slight height and thickness rises have
resulted in slightly warmer temperatures today. NBM deterministic
surface temperatures and dewpoints are running a little high - so
have shaved these back slightly matching observational trends.
Meso analysis shows an axis of 1000-1500 MLCAPEs into ILN/s
southwest. This combined with a weak embedded mid level shortwave
may lead to isold showers and perhaps a thunderstorm across the south
thru late day.
Diurnally driven cumulus clouds to dissipate with the loss of
daytime heating this evening. Light winds and clear skies will
likely lead to the development of patchy fog by Saturday morning.
Mild low temperatures to range from the upper 60s to around 70.
&&
.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
Mid level ridge remains centered over the Mid MS Valley Saturday.
With the ridge situated west of the area - this place ILN/s area
around it`s periphery in a northwest flow pattern.
Most of the area will remain dry through the daylight hours, an
initial cluster of showers/storms should approach and move into
northwest parts of the local area late in the day and a second
late Saturday night. The exact evolution regarding timing and
placement of these thunderstorm complexes remains a bit uncertain.
Highs on Saturday will top out in the lower 90s with dewpoints in
the upper 60s to to around 70 degrees. This will create heat index
values in the mid to upper 90s by mid/late afternoon. NBM
deterministic surface high temperatures and dewpoints look to be
running a little high and have been adjusted down slightly. Mild lows
generally drop to around 70.
&&
.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Similar to yesterday`s model updates, latest ensemble guidance is
trending toward non-trivial chances of showers/storms Sunday and
Monday, especially near/north of I-70. Mid-level ridge centered
across the central Plains through middle Mississippi Valley will
slowly retrograde west early next week as periodic shortwave energy
begins to dig into the Great Lakes and Northeast. There is a noted
signal for showers and storms even outside the normal diurnal
timeframe of mid to late afternoon. NBM has begun to pick up on
this, with a chance for convection beginning Sunday morning.
Due to these trends, have adjusted high temperatures a degree or two
lower from the model blend due to additional cloud cover and
slightly higher PoPs. Beyond this, main story of the extended period
will be showers and storms along a mid-week cold front with a cooler
and drier pattern arriving late in the week.
&&
.AVIATION /18Z FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
A weak mid level shortwave combined with MLCAPE values of 1000-1500
J/KG will lead to isold showers and thunderstorms across southern
Ohio and Northern KY this aftn. Due to limited coverage have not
mentioned thunder in the TAF sites.
VFR cumulus clouds will dissipate with the loss of daytime heating
early this evening. Light winds and clear skies will lead to fog
development overnight. Expect widespread MVFR vsby restrictions with
IFR at KLUK and KILN. Fog improves quickly after sunrise Saturday
with VFR cumulus clouds developing. Convection that develops is
expected to remain north/northwest of the TAF sites - so have not
mention of thunder at this time.
Winds are expected to be light and variable through the period.
OUTLOOK...Thunderstorms are possible Sunday through Tuesday.
